چکیده

HE characteristics of myoglobin ifz citro have been demonstrated to be those of a respiratory pigment, but the role of myoglobin ilz vivo has yet to be fully established. The literature to date affords two substantiated concepts with regard to its physiologic muscle as a distinct heme pigment, nature; namely, and that it may that myoglobin exists in striated act as a short-time oxygen store in the cell to tide the muscle over from one contraction to the next (I). The study here reported was undertaken to determine whether or not myoglobin plays a part in the adaptation response of the organism to chronic hypoxia. Specifically, the study was designed to elucidate the physiologic effect of high altitude hypoxia on disclose the myoglobin concentration in specific muscles of albino rats, and to the extent, if any, of parallelism between changes in the myoglobin content of muscles and the increase in hemoglobin content of blood which occurs because of altitude hypoxia.

Myoglobin: an essential hemoprotein in striated muscle.

Myoglobin is a cytoplasmic hemoprotein, expressed solely in cardiac myocytes and oxidative skeletal muscle fibers, that reversibly binds O2 by its heme residue, a porphyrin ring:iron ion complex. Since the initial discovery of its structure over 40 years ago, wide-ranging work by many investigators has added importantly to our understanding of its function and regulation. Functionally, myoglobi...

Influence of Glucose on the Transmembrane Action Potential of Anoxic Papillary Muscle

The response of the cat papillary muscle to anoxia has been found to alter depending on the glucose concentration in the medium. At a glucose concentration of 5 mM anoxia caused a marked reduction in force of contraction and action potential duration within 20 minutes. At a glucose concentration of 50 mM anoxia induced similar changes in the force of contraction but little or no change in actio...

The roles of tissue nitrate reductase activity and myoglobin in securing nitric oxide availability in deeply hypoxic crucian carp.

In mammals, treatment with low doses of nitrite has a cytoprotective effect in ischemia/reperfusion events, as a result of nitric oxide formation and S-nitrosation of proteins. Interestingly, anoxia-tolerant lower vertebrates possess an intrinsic ability to increase intracellular nitrite concentration during anoxia in tissues with high myoglobin and mitochondria content, such as the heart. Here...

Myoglobin concentration in skeletal muscle fibers of chronic heart failure patients.

The purpose of this study was to determine the myoglobin concentration in skeletal muscle fibers of chronic heart failure (CHF) patients and to calculate the effect of myoglobin on oxygen buffering and facilitated diffusion. Myoglobin concentration, succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activity, and cross-sectional area of individual muscle fibers from the vastus lateralis of five control and nine CHF...

Reduction by adenosine of the isoproterenol-induced increase in cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate formation and glycogen phosphorylase activity in rat heart muscle.

The effect of adenosine on the increase in cardiac cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cyclic AMP) concentration and glycogen phosphorylase activity produced by isoproterenol was investigated. Slices of rat ventricular myocardium 0.5 mm thick weighing 15-20 mg were cut, washed, and incubated at 37 °C in physiological saline gassed with either O2 (oxygenated) or N2 (anoxia). The concentration ...
